Aim
The aim is to assess UHI student views of the learning experiences via networked learning and to identify some of the pedagogical principles (from the literature) that underpin successful networked learning.
From there we can maybe suggest that UHI incorporates some of the student views and preferences, along with the pedagogical principles, into its use of networked learning across subjects.
Methodology
An insight into the student’s view of the learning process would provide a base for informing our approach to learning and teaching through networked learning and for deciding on a strategy for designing and delivering such courses.
From the students perceptions of their learning experiences, we can deduce the common characteristics of successful learning and interactions, and seek to specify the conditions that any instructional strategy and delivery method or learning channel must address in order to elicit meaningful learning.
Working Definitions:
I am using the term networked learning as defined by Peter Goodyear (2001) because it encapsulates the essence of learning using technology:
“Learning in which information and communcations technology is used to promote connections: between one learner and other learners; between learners and tutors; between a learning community and its learning resources.”
What I mean by online learning is that the computer and the Internet are the central element of the learning activities and provide the learning content.
What I mean by learning is taking in and acquiring new material that results in a change in knowledge, skill or attitude. Learning is a context i.e a frame of reference a learner puts around a subject.
What I mean by teaching is the ability to convey information in a clear and concise way that enables learners to learn quickly, and the ability to expose the learners to the experience of learning that will encourage their desire to learn more.
Methods
- Conduct f2f focus groups with online learners to investigate broad issues
- Conduct online survey with all UHI online learners into their views on online learning experiences
- Conduct follow up telephone or email interviews with some of the learners
- Conduct online survey with all UHI online tutors and developers
- Conduct follow up telephone or email interviews with some of the tutors and developers
- Conduct email interviews with experienced online facilitators and developers outside of UHI
- Conduct literature search to identify e-pedagogical principles
- Keep an online journal
