The research problem I have started to investigate is that learners are not necessarily accomplishing learning online across all subjects. The quality of the courses varies. It seems to me that many online courses are not designed and delivered with the learners in mind and are therefore less effective than they could be.

I am keen to find out the learners perceptions of the online learning process and the learning channels that help them to learn their particular subject online while at the same time comparing their perceptions with some of the learners demographics, preferred learning styles & characteristics, and the specific subject they are studying.

I plan to carry out a benchmark poll to assess the current situation of the views of networked learning by UHI learners: what they like and dislike … how they learn … in an attempt to create a coherent picture of learners experience.

Different learning channels and resources present material in different ways and how well they succeed depends to some extent on the learning strategies of the learner. For example, research has shown that learning and in particular recall is greatest:

  1. Direct experience (results in highest recall)
  2. TV & video i.e. pictures and sound
  3. Words linked to a sound track
  4. Books i.e. words alone (result in lowest recall.)
